Cachexia or Wasting Syndrome

Benefits of Cannabis: Cannabis, particularly the THC component, has been shown to increase appetite and decrease weight loss.

Risks of Cannabis: There were no specific risks in use of cannabis in this population of patients.

Suggested Initial Therapy: the inhalation route of administration will likely be the most effective in this group of patients.

  • Flower: administered by smoking or dry herb vaporization used 15 min - 30 min before a scheduled meal will help improve appetite. Strains lower in the Limonene and Humulene terpenes will be preferred as those can decrease appetite.
  • Vape Cartridges: very discreet and effective. Choose cartridges which are “full spectrum” containing terpenes (avoid limonene and humulene) to leverage the entourage effect.
